For many couples, a dog is much more than a pet. They are part of the family. They’ve been there for the everyday moments and often from the very beginning of your relationship. It’s only natural to want them to be part of your wedding day.
Including your dog in your wedding can bring a lot of warmth and personality to the celebration. With a little planning, your pup can be part of the day in a way that feels relaxed and enjoyable for everyone.
Having worked with dogs for many years, I’ve also seen how sensitive they can be to new environments. A bit of preparation ahead of time can make a big difference and help the day go smoothly.
Have Your Dog Walk Down the Aisle
One of the most common ways couples include their dog is by having them walk down the aisle. Some couples choose to have their dog act as the ring bearer, often with a small pouch attached to their harness or collar.
It’s helpful to practice the walk ahead of time and have someone your dog knows guide them. Many couples also choose to have someone else hold the rings just to be safe, while the dog simply walks down the aisle.
Include Your Dog in Your Wedding Photos
Even if your dog doesn’t participate in the ceremony itself, including them in your photos is a lovely way to make them part of the day.
Many couples arrange for their dog to come by for a short time before or after the ceremony so they can take a few photos together. These moments often end up being some of the most natural photos of the day.
Dress Your Dog for the Occasion
Some couples like to dress their dog up a little for the wedding. A simple bow tie, floral collar, or bandana can make them feel like part of the celebration.
Comfort should always come first. Make sure whatever they wear fits properly and doesn’t bother them. If your dog isn’t used to wearing accessories, letting them try it on beforehand and pairing it with praise and treats can help.
Have Someone Look After Your Dog
If your dog will be at the ceremony or venue, it helps to have someone responsible for them during the day.
This person can bring them to the ceremony, walk them beforehand, help during photos, and take them home when they’ve had enough excitement. It allows you to enjoy the moment knowing your dog is being looked after.
Some couples ask a friend, neighbour, dog walker, or trainer their dog already knows.
Think About Your Dog’s Personality.
Not every dog enjoys crowds, loud music, or long events. If your dog tends to get nervous or overwhelmed, it might be better for them to join just for photos or be included in another way.
The goal is for your dog to feel comfortable too.
A Special Part of Your Story
Your wedding is a celebration of your life together, and for many couples that life includes a beloved dog.
Whether they walk down the aisle, appear in a few photos, or simply stop by for a quick visit before the ceremony, including them in your wedding can make the day feel even more personal.
Sometimes the simplest moments, like a photo with your dog or a quiet cuddle before the ceremony, end up being the ones you remember most.
Wishing you a lifetime of love, happiness, and many happy walks together,
